Salt River Alpacas believes firmly that the development of a fiber industry is critical to the advancement of our national breeding stock. To that end, we have been involved with the development of fiber products since we purchased our first Suris. We developed a line of needlepoint yarns that are now sold in retail stores around the country, and we began offering yarns for knitting and weaving in 2007.
With the experience of developing the needlepoint yarns, Liz took on the role of Chairperson for the Suri Network's Product Development Committee. This committee put Suri on the U.S. fiber map and was one of the most active committees in the alpaca industry. Just look at what they've accomplished:
- Educational booths at some of the largest fiber festivals in the country,
- Educational seminars for all Suri Network members,
- Articles in Purely Suri and Spin-off Magazine,
- The first knitting patterns ever developed for Suri,
- The first Suri Fiber Harvesting Code of Practice ever developed.
Due to the great success of promoting Suri, demand for the fiber has increased significantly, and Liz felt the next step was to put together a central location where people could purchase graded, high quality Suri. As such, Liz has recently stepped down from the Product Development Committee and is now starting a private business which will allow designers and producers of end products to purchase larger quanitities of this great fiber for further development and promotion, and get cash back to growers!
