Males are typically broken into two categories:
Category A: These are males that could (should) be used as herdsires in someone's breeding program. Only a very small percentage of males make it into this category, and there are different levels of breeding males - from those that are appropriate for farms just starting their breeding program to those that are best used by experienced/advanced breeding programs. We will give you our thoughts on where a particular male might fit.
Category B: Often called "fiber males", these are the most common males, and every female will produce one or more of these guys. These males are great not only for their fiber, but also for learning about alpacas. For new owners, you can learn to catch them, give shots, clip toe nails, and get a feel for the level of care that these creatures require (generally low maintenance!). They are truly invaluable, and can bring a nice return on their fiber as well. At Salt River Alpacas, we sell our fiber males at very reasonable rates, with the understanding that you can always return them - if you decide alpacas aren't for you, they have a place to come back to; if you decide to push forward with a breeding program and don't need these guys anymore, they have a place to come back to. We don't ever want our customers to feel "stuck", and we can always use them in our fiber program.
So take a look at these guys and give us a call if you have any questions or would like to look at any of them:
Category A:

Name: White Knight's Shining Armor
ARI: 31167697
Color: Beige
DOB: 09/21/2009
Sire: 4Peruvian White Knight
Dam: Ameripaca's Courtnie
Sale Price: $5,000 for 1/2 interest
Show Wins: 2nd place, 2010 Small Breeders Challenge, Wade Giese judge. Wade commented on Shining Armor's amazing fineness, his luster, and his lovely conformation. Shining Armor was a close second behind an entry from Suri Peak Alpacas!
Fiber Stats: MFD - 17.6, SD - 3.2, CV - 18.0 - These are truly spectacular fiber results, even at 1 year of age!! This guy will definitely be skin biopsied in Spring, 2011.
Description: We are so excited about Shining Armor's fiber results, and his conformation is just wonderful, too. Really, one of the best we've produced on the farm. We never planned to offer him for sale, but it has suddenly occurred to us that he is related to a number of the white girls we have. So, while we will breed him to our colored girls, we really want him to get more use. With these rare genetics, great conformation, and unbelievable fiber stats, he needs to get some offspring on the ground! So, we encourage you to join us in ownership.

Name: Salt River's Heatwave
ARI: 31167666
Color: Beige
DOB: 06/18/2009
Sire: SBS Solstice
Dam: Salt River's Bella Donna
Sale Price: $5,000
Show Wins:
2nd Place - 2010 Mid-America Alpaca Show, Topeka. Judge: Jill MacLeod. Heatwave had great competition at this show and was right in the hunt placing ahead of Wilkins Livestock Co. and just behind Pine's Edge Suris - two of the best Suri breeding programs in the U.S.
3rd Place - 2010 Northern IL Alpaca Extravaganza. Judge: David Barboza. The judge stated that the first three Suris placed all represented the ideal Suri alpaca and the differences between 1st and 3rd were small.
We plan to show Heatwave further in the Spring of 2011.
Fiber Stats: Density - 53.6 follicles/sq mm, S/P ratio - 10.9/1, glands 4/4, micron spread - 7.4, medullation- 60%, MFD - 20.1, SD - 4.9, CV - 24.5.
Description: Heatwave is a fine representation of Salt River Alpacas' breeding program. Both his sire and dam demonstrate superior fleece qualities, and these traits have clearly passed on to Heatwave. He has that silky, cool handle that Suri breeders strive for. He has independent locks with very little cotting, even in an 18 month fleece. And his luster is outstanding. Heatwave is conformationally correct, and this guy garnered a number of compliments from breeders at both shows in which he was entered. And to top it all off, Heatwave has a lovely disposition and is easy to handle and work with.
Heatwave would be ideal as a first breeding male for a new farm to add density, low micron spread, and maybe most importantly, retention of fineness, since both sire and dam have been able to hold their micron at 28 or better as proven adults.

Name: LCA Boots
ARI: 30583092
Color: Multi
DOB: 10/7/2006
Breeding Stauts: Proven
Sire: Snowmass Nautilus
Dam: Corissa
Sales Price: $7000 for 1/2 interest
Show wins:
1st & Color Champion - 2008 Futurity
1st Place - 2008 Kentucky Classic (no championship offered for multis)
1st Place - 2007 OABA (no championship offered for multis)
1st Place - 2007 Mid-America Alpaca Show (no championship offered for multis)
2nd Place - 2007 Midwest Alpaca Jamboree
Fiber Stats:
Density - 49.5; S/P - 11.5:1; Glands - 3 of 4; Micron spread - 8.6; Medullation - 100%; 2009 MFD - 24.2; CV - 22
Description: Boots is a product of great genetics - MacGyver (Bruxo), Inca, Uribe, and Starbuck - so it shouldn't be any surprise that he's such a "looker". His sire, Snowmass Nautilus, is no longer available for outside breedings, making him all that much more special!
We began using Boots in our breeding program in Fall 2009, but with a small herd, and so many nice herdsires, we got to use him on only one girl. That cria is on the ground (a boy) and he is just beautiful! Soft hand, nice lock stucture, beautiful luster - Boots really put his mark on this little boy and we want to use him more! To get his genetics out there more, we encourage you to consider joint ownership with us. So give us a call.
What we do with the fiber: Boots's fiber is always a bit of a challenge given all the dark fawn fibers interwoven into his locks. This year, we will most likely process it into yarn for a one-of-a-kind knitting project!

Name: SBS Solstice
ARI: 1068887
Color: White
DOB: 12/23/2003
Breeding Status: Proven
Sire: 6P Crown Royale
Dam: 6P Nastaza
Sale Price: $7000 for 1/2 ownership
Show Wins: Solstice was not shown in halter classes due to previous owner conflict. However, Solstice's fleece was entered in the Suri Network's All Suri Fleece Show - the largest in the country, and it garnered a blue ribbon!
Fiber Stats:
Density - 46.5; S/P - 9.6:1; Glands - 2 of 4; Micron spread - 6.4; Medullation - 60%; 2009 MFD - 24.2 microns; CV - 21.9
Description: Solstice is an outstanding combination of 2 outstanding parents--6P Accoyo Crown Royale (multi-award winning full accoyo import who is unrelated to any other accoyo lines in the U.S.) and 6P Nastaza, mother of Arizona Sage and SBS Buckeye (Arizona Sage was undefeated in the 2002/2003 show season with 7 Championships and SBS Buckeye took 8 1st place ribbons in the 2003/2004 show season!). Crown Royale's breedings are limited to only ten per year and only existing customers can purchase breedings. That makes Solstice's genetics even more special! To top it all off, Solstice's dam is dark fawn, and those color genetics are coming through - just look at his offspring: four out of his eight offspring have been colored, and he has even produced color from white! This confirms our belief that there is all kinds of color opportunity with this guy.
Solstice has produced many ribbon winners - his latest offspring, Salt River's Brownie, just took a championshiop at the 2011 GMAF show! We are placing Solstice on our sales list only because we have used him a fair amount in our herd, and anticipate using other herdsires with his offspring. Solstice has been the hallmark of our breeding program to date, and his offspring have always sold well, even in a difficult economy. Don't let this opportunity pass you by!
What we do with the fiber: We always turn Solstice's fiber into roving - it is soft and lustrous, and Kaye Collins, spinner extrordinaire, has indicated it is some of the best she has worked with.
Category B:
Sold out for now! But check back regularly as we have had more boys than girls this year, and while they all look like future herdsires now, they're only 3 weeks old! So, we're sure that some will fall into the Fiber Male category over the next few months.
